The north-west coast resort of AGIOS STEFANOS (west) is usually referred to as SAN STEFANOS to distinguish it from the resort of the same name in the northeast of Corfu.
Although still relatively undeveloped by some Corfu resort standards, San Stefanos has seen considerable growth in the last few years and the resort can now accommodate about 12,000 tourists annually.
Only 30 years ago San Stefanos was nothing more than a fishing hamlet but it now boats more than 20 restaurants, clutches of souvenir shops, many bars and several supermarkets to meet the needs of the growing number of annual visitors.
San Stefanos is a relatively quiet relaxed resort, about 50km from Corfu Town, and sited on the Kefali Cape with fine views of the Diapontian islands in the Ionian Sea.
San Stefanos sits in a beautiful bay and has a decent sandy beach. It is very popular with UK families and the resort is included in several holiday brochures.
The original old San Stefanos village is located around the church and the old harbour and it has a couple of traditional tavernas. The new resort and port provides the centre for tourist activity.
A winding country road leads down to San Stefanos bay and beach. The rural backdrop invites walking in the surrounding hills and there are boat trips to the nearby islets, excursions to Sidari and Corfu Town and longer cruises to nearby islands such as Kefalonia and Paxos.
San Stefanos beach is about 2km long, with shallow water that's safe for children and it has a broad stretch of soft sand.
