Sougia is a relatively remote, long pebble beach on the south coast of Crete. In recent years it has become very popular but at 1km long it rarely feels crowded even on busy summer weekends. It is about 75km from Chania over the mountains and the remoteness has kept it off the main tourist trail, though it is becoming an increasingly popular weekend retreat for Cretans.
The road winds up through the pass at Agia Irini but there are a couple of public buses each day. Most visitors arrive by boat or on foot from Paleochora. Though almost completely pebbles, with a sharp drop into the sea, the stones are small so it is not as uncomfortable to lie on as some beaches. The eastern end of the beach is popular with naturists. You must lie on the stones as there are no sun beds here.
There is a small village here, plenty of low key accommodation and some very good tavernas ( I counted 10) with menu prices that are well below average for the island. Sheltered at the end of a deep valley it is well protected from winds and was recently voted one of the cleanest beaches in Greece. The resort is popular with walkers as there are some very good trails, notably to Lissos and through the dramatic gorge at Agia Irini.
