Afandou is the largest beach on the holiday island of Rhodes, with a single wide strip of gritty sand and pebble stretching for a straight 7km, so long on fact you can hardly see one end from the other. It's located about 22km from Rhodes Town on the the eastern coastal strip between Faliraki and Kolymbia. There are a couple of tavernas and a beach cantina - not much for 7km and most of this huge beach is deserted for most of the year.
Afandou village is 2km inland and the flat area between the two is divided by the busy main road and is dotted with apartments and small hotels that are popular with British and German tour companies. The main road has a few more tavernas strung along it and there are more cafes, bars and tavernas, of course, in Afandou village proper.
Between the beach and the main road is a links golf course - the only one on Rhodes - and beach visitors from the village can cross one of the fairways to get to the sands or take the longer road around. There is a road that runs along the back of the beach for about three quarters of its length.
The most popular sections of the beach have the facilities - sun beds and umbrellas - and some low key watersports. The beach is so big it never gets crowded and so desolate looking it is hardly ever likely to. The shoreline dips sharply into the sea where there are large rocks, so its not even pleasant for children. Many holidaymakers staying in the area give Afandou beach one look then head elsewhere.
