Antisamos Kefalonia travel guide

The popular beach of Antisamos is located on the east coast of Kefalonia and holidaymakers staying at the nearby port resort of Sami are its most regular visitors.

Once a remote cove enjoyed by only a few its fame grew after scenes from the hit movie Captain Corelli's Mandolin were shot on Antisamos beach and it is now a much busier spot.

It certainly enjoys a spectacular setting at the end of a deep horseshoe bay at the bottom of very steep cliffs and with heavily wooded protective hills on either side.

A large taverna and car park has been built at the back of the beach and the steep, twisting access road has been much improved to provide easy access for cars.

The white pebbles that stretch the length of the beach at Antisamos continue under the water and add some vibrant colour to the shoreline, from aquamarine to pale green as the bright sunlight is reflected from the sea floor.

Antisamos beach is very exposed and there is no natural shade except for a few olive trees at the eastern end. Sunbeds and parasols are crammed into close ranks along the shore and they are not cheap.

The pebble beach at Antisamos also drops very sharply into the sea so children must be watched but this is a great beach for snorkelling as the clear water and bright white pebbles offer an exceptionally clear view of the marine life.
