Antisamos Kefalonia

Antisamos is a popular beach on the east coast of Kefalonia and often used by visitors staying in the nearby port of Sami. Once famously quiet and often deserted its fame has grown since scenes for a movie were shot here. It's popularity is slowly becoming its ruin.
The beach is set in an attractive horseshoe bay with steep hills on either side and former fields at the back of the beach have now been turned into an unattractive and expensive car park. A car is the only way to reach this beach unless you care for a long and steep 3km walk along a narrow road. There are very good views across the bay as you descend the road but care must be taken with potholes after sewage works left many parts of the surface in bad repair.
The beach at Antisamos is covered in sparkling white pebbles which continue under the water to create a very deep aquamarine shimmer that is very attractive. Unfortunately the beach also appears to collect gobs of tar and oil from passing ships and you must be careful where you sit at the western end in particular. The beach has little shade and it is quite exposed except for a few clumps of olive trees at the eastern end of the beach to provide some natural shade.
A small cantina opens in the summer to provide the basics and some more shade beneath the trees. Sun beds are for hire but they are expensive and crammed closely together. Otherwise there are no facilities here. The stones dip very sharply into the sea so this is not a beach to leave children unsupervised but it is ideal for snorkeling as the white stones provide a very clear view of the sea bed. The driving distance ensures the beach remains relatively uncrowded.
