Poros beach Kefalonia

POROS is a quiet Kefalonia port on the east coast, about 38km from Argostoli, that has fallen out of favour with British holiday package companies in recent years as tourists have headed for the better beaches of Skala and Katelios.
Poros is on the east coast of Kefalonia, north of Skala, and is a popular port of call for yachting flotillas. There are also ferry links to mainland Greece from here.
Poros is another town rebuilt after the 1953 earthquake and it's architecture is characterless and drab, though the resort is set in a dramatic location with the mountains of Atros and Pahni behind.
The town beach of Poros is called Aragia. It's a 600m stretch of shingle and sand down dirt tracks from Poros town. There are sunbeds, showers and toilets. There is another pebble beach across the small river bridge and here are more sun beds, motor boats for hire and some tavernas.
Poros is a good centre for walking and hiking. There are paths to the oldest monastery on Kefalonia, the monastery of the Virgin Mary on top of a 500 metre high hill with stunning views.
Other attractions for walkers are the Poros Ravine, an 80m deep precipice where the rocks are said to bear the footprints of Hercules and the springs of the River Vohinas springs said to come from a 'bottomless' lake which is just a dry river bed in the summer.
Poros town authorities have also created a walking trail around the local villages of Asprogeraka, Riza, Kabitsata and Tzanata that takes about 3 hrs to walk.
