KEFALOS on Kos is the name now given to not only the hillside village but to the area below, pretty much a low rise tourist sprawl that straggles along the beach at Kamari.
The fusion is now so complete that the two names are often used for the same area. For more on the beach area see the Kamari report and amp. Kefalos village is about 40km from Kefalos Town and about 20 min from the airport north of Kardamena.
The area around Kefalos is known for its dramatic scenery, a result of much volcanic activity in the past, and for the long Kamari or Kefalos beach below, backed by tavernas, bars and tourist shops.
The area below the old Kefalos village is basically a purpose-built tourist resort which enjoyed a big influx of holidaymakers a few years ago but in recent years appears to have fallen on leaner times.
Kefalos resort is noted for good, cheap tavernas. Kefalos also have several souvenir shops and mini markets. Although there are a couple of nightclubs, Kefalos will mainly appeal to families and those looking for a quiet Greek island holiday.
Kefalos beach is a mixture of sand and shingle and there are a wide range of water sports. Just across the bay are a string of sandy beaches that many consider the best on Kos so it's not unusual for people to stay in Kefalos, dine in Kamari and sunbathe on Paradise beach across the bay.
