NIDRI or NYDRI is the main holiday resort of Lefkas and is located between Lefkas Town, about 17km to the north, and the port of Vassiliki, about 21km south.
Although surrounded by hills and with hilly islands offshore, Nidri town is mainly flat so it is popular with walkers and cyclists. Local attractions include Nydri Waterfalls, about 4km from the village, and roads around Vlicho Bay to the church of Agia Kiriaki on the headland of Geni opposite, about 8km.
Nidri has a wide variety of restaurants and bars with a decent selection of traditional Greek tavernas dotted among the pizza parlours and international restaurants. Bars are plentiful and a couple of nightclubs open in the main season.
Nidri has a couple of banks and several cash machines. There are plenty of mini-markets open throughout the summer and three chemists at the last count. A health centre is in the village and there are several doctors' surgeries. The main road through the resort is notoriously busy.
Nidri beaches are pleasant enough, gently shelving banks of shingle mostly, although lorry loads of sand have been tipped to make parts more attractive to tourists. There are plenty of sunbeds and watersports available. Visitors report that the water is not always very clean, especially on stretches close to the harbour.
Nidri is the focus of the annual Ionian Regatta, one of the biggest yachting events in the Med and normally held in the third week of September. It can attract more than 200 yachts, making for a spectacular sight in the bay. Many boat skippers offer a day out to follow the event with beach barbecues thrown in for good measure.
Well sheltered on the each coast, with the huge hook of Geni creating an almost enclosed bay, Nidri is a big yachting centre all year round. Calm waters make it a good place to learn to sail and there are dozens of quiet coves to visit along the shoreline.
Nidri has it's own small ferry port with ferries to Kefalonia, Ithaca and Meganisi. Nidri also has a good local bus service with regular services to Lefkas Town.
