VASSILIKI has a world class reputation for windsurfing. Vassiliki Bay is located on the south coast of Lefkas and is the second biggest holiday resort on the island after Nidri with a permanent population of about 400.
For much of the holiday season it is a quiet resort but in high summer, most notably in August, Vassiliki is a mecca for windsurfers.
The windsurfing reputation of Vassiliki is based on the shallow water that reaches far out into the bay coupled with the afternoon wind, dubbed by the windsurfers as 'Eric', which triggers scores, sometimes more than a hundred windsurfers and kite boarders out onto the water - a spectacular sight.
Vassiliki beach is mainly pebble with some shingle and some sand even, but not that much. The shore is full of windsurfing and sailing clubs. Sailboats and catamarans are available for hire and Vassiliki is one of the best places in Greece to learn to sail.
Vassiliki resort has several tavernas and bars and there are the usual village facilities, but no bank. There is a cash point but high demand means it can often run out at busy times.
Tavernas are clustered around the harbour which is a popular target of yachts and flotillas. There is also a ferry from Vassiliki to Kefalonia and Ithaca in the summer.
There is a campsite that attracts surfers for the Vassiliki season and Vassiliki beach hotels will offer special facilities for windsurfers.
There are daily boat trips in the high season and there is a regular daily bus service from Vassiliki to Lefkas Town in the summer, but it doesn't run on Sunday.
