Just about the farthest west you can get on Mykonos and facing the island of Delos, the beach at Agios Ioannis has been trading on its fame as the main location in the hit 1980s' movie Shirley Valentine. It was probably chosen more for its fine sunsets than for any intrinsic merit as a holiday resort.
The beach is rather small with sand and pebble but it does site in a very picturesque location and there are lots of small coves to enjoy along this part of the coast. Though close to Mykonos Town - just 5km away -it has less to offer than nearby beaches like Ornos and doesn't attract great crowds.
Being small it does tend to get full up very quickly. The sand is gently shelving and fine for children. The beach is divided by a large rocky outcrop. To the north is the main beach, the bus stop, the car park and plenty of umbrellas and sun beds. At the far northern end a small picturesque chapel sits above the tiny harbour.
South of the rock is a smaller beach. Both beaches are overlooked by extensive hotel development. There is a tiny beach at nearby Kapari for those that yearn for solitude. There are no shops or mini markets here, this is very much now beach hotel territory.
