Blessed with a bucket load of sandy beaches Skiathos has mushroomed into a major holiday destination. The tiny island - only 12km by 4km - is peppered with sandy bays and island peaks are coated in lush pine forests. The main port at Skiathos town has a cosmopolitan air with yachts packing the harbour and island's most famous beach at Koukounaries is often voted one of the best in the world. But such delights obviously attract the crowds and spreading burger bars, cement hotels and neon-lit tavernas have taken their toll on the Greek experience.
