PEFKOS was a small Greek fishing until holiday developers moved in around the late 1980s. At first it was a few apartments and shops designed to take the overspill from the hugely popular Lindos which is just 3km away, but it has now become a resort in its own right.
Pefkos is located on Rhodes' southeast coast, about 56km from Rhodes Town and it takes about two hours to get there from the airport.
Pefkos means pine trees in Greek, and Pefkos has plenty of those stretching back up from the sandy beach to the main resort which is a single strip of tourist development.
The main street of Pefkos sits well back from the beach and is basically a single street with a purpose-built tourist mall with a several restaurants, tavernas and bars as well as the usual selection of gift and souvenir shops.
Pefkos is made up of modern, low-rise, concrete hotels and self-catering apartment complexes set in gardens with pools. It manages a village atmosphere without being a village. There are a couple of cash points, a pharmacy and a doctor.
Pefkos is very popular with Brits who make up most of the tourist numbers. Most visitors opt for self-catering apartments, and return regularly. There are about a dozen tavernas and a similar number of bars, including Brit-style pubs with big screen TV and karaoke.
Apartments are spread around between the main street and the beach area. Pefkos is aimed at couples and families and is very much low key as there is not a lot to do other than sunbathe, eat and drink in the bars.
Tracks lead down from the main street through pine woods to the Pefkos beach area. The main Pefkos beach is a long narrow strip of soft sand, just deep enough to allow two rows of sunbeds and umbrellas.
There are several Pefkos beach bars for snacks and some watersports though these are usually low key. There are a couple of sandy stretches nearby that are less crowded, with just a single row of sunbeds.
Regular buses run between Pefkos and Lindos where there are six buses per day to Rhodes Town. There is car and bike hire here but you may have to order a taxi. There are boats that run along the coast to Lindos.
