The Greek Islands are one of the most popular of holiday destination, especially for European holidaymakers. The building of airports on many of the larger (and some smaller) Greek Islands in the 1960's helped to fuel a major holiday boom. With charter air flights bringing in summer visitors in their thousands and with a networks of ferries linking many of the smaller islands they quickly developed a good attractive tourist infrastructure that helped sustain the package holiday boom.
Any number of websites appeared to provide information and guides to those wishing to travel to the Greek Islands. I have included some here that I'm sure will appeal to Greek Island holidaymakers. This is a selection of Greek Island websites that are specific either to particular islands or to one of the main Greek Island groups. The Greek islands are divided into seven main groups and they are the Argosaronic Gulf, which lies just south of Athens and where the main islands are Aegina, Agistri, Hydra, and Spetses. The Cyclades lies even further south of Athens and includes islands such as Andros, Milos, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Ios and Santorini as well as many smaller ones.
Along the Turkish coast are theDodecanese, with islands such as Halki, Karpathos, Rhodes, Symi and, further north, the islands of Kos and Kalymnos. Just off the east coast mainland is the small group of the Sporades, comprised of Alonissos, Skiathos and Skopelos while to the north-east of these is the Aegean, with Thassos, Lesvos and Samos.
The Ionian island group is found off the north-west coast of mainland Greece and has the popular holiday islands of Corfu, Kefalonia, Lefkas and Zante. The remaining island is not a group but Crete, which lies not far from the coast of North Africa and is one of the the largest of the Greek Islands.
