MEGALI AMMOS is considered the Skiathos Town beach as it lies just over the headland from the main town harbour and about 3km away so it is walkable or just a quick taxi ride away.
Megali Ammos and the neighbouring Vassilias beach together form a 2km long strip of sand, with Megali Ammos by far the busier and most developed of the two, it being nearest to Skiathos Town centre.
Megali Ammos means "big sands" in Greek but the beach belies the name. Although long and sandy it Megali Ammos beach is still quite narrow, with just enough room for two or three rows of tightly packed sunbeds, which is pretty much what you see from one end to the other in the high season.
Hotels and tavernas line the back of Megali Ammos beach and behind those is the main road where bus stops 5 and 6 service this section beach, making the sea only a few minutes walk if you go there by bus.
Beyond the road, the land slopes pretty steeply into the hills so, if you are based in Megali Ammos, it is a good idea to check if your accommodation is below the main road it above it if you don't fancy a steep walk uphill after a day on the beach.
Megali Ammos beach is well organised with plenty of sunbeds and watersports. The sea here is also shallow, so this is a good beach for families with children and the northerly breeze can keep the east-facing Megali Ammos beach a little cooler in the summer.
A small outcrop of rock marks the western end of Megali Ammos beach and the eastern end of Vassilias beach. Those looking to escape the crowds will walk around the rocks and head east away from the throng.
