Limenas Thassos

Limenas is the main port and capital of Thassos. The name of the former village Limenas is slowly being dropped in favour of Thassos now that it has grown into a more provincial resort. Once rather noisy and dirty it has undergone a big cleanup in recent years. The harbour has been extended west so that marble lorries from nearby quarries no longer roar through the town centre and many streets have been made traffic free and paved with brick.
The town has about 2,000 permanent residents mostly now involved with tourism. Flat fields to the west of the port have undergone a building boom and are now covered in small hotels and apartments. The town beach is to the east beyond the old taverna lined harbour.
It is a pleasant enough beach, backed by pines and a row beach tavernas. The sand is brought in by lorry every now and then as the beach turns to shingle and it slopes gently into the sea. There are the usual facilities like sun beds and showers. Toilets are found in the nearby tavernas. Behind the harbour is the old town, now traffic free, where there are dozens of tavernas, bars and shops, some of the latter more up-market than the usual tourist trinket and souvenir outlets.
There are notable Roman ruins above the town, but it's a steep climb so you need to be fit. There's also the ruins of an agora (market) in the town centre and a small museum exhibiting rare finds.
