Skala Potamia Thassos

Skala Potamia, or Skala Potamis, is on the east coast of Thassos about 10km from Limenas and located at the the more popular western end of Golden Beach or Chrisi Atki as it is also known. The resort is very popular with UK holiday companies and the resort has grown considerably in recent years.
The dust appears to have settled on most new building now but the result is a rather straggling resort with apartments dotted here and there with all roads leading to the beach. It was once only the port for the more important mountain village of Potamia above but is now rather like a child that has outgrown its parent.
The beach at Skala Potamis is a large triangle of white, gritty sand bounded on once side by the sea (obviously), a small harbour to the west and an avenue of tavernas and cafes behind. Attempts to cash on visiting families is much in evidence with even a dodgems built along the back of the beach.
There are the usual sun beds and water sports, though the latter are relatively low key (so far). The sand banks rather steeply into the sea so children must be watched, but this is a reasonably safe beach. The sands narrow as they head eastwards toward the far end of the beach some 2km away at Skala Panagia. As the sand thins it becomes grit, then rocks along the shore and virtually disappears as it meets the tarmac road that has been laid from Skala Potamis to Skala Panagia. Then it broadens again and becomes more sandy as it approached the other end of the bay.
Various other tavernas have grown up along the shoreline along with mini markets and trinket shops as visitor numbers have grown. Although it has suffered a lot of tourist development in recent years it is still very much a quiet and laid back resort for those who prefer the Greek experience to come with chips, burgers and some karaoke.
