GOLDEN BEACH Thassos island, also called CHRYSI AMMOUDIA or CHRISI ATKI is a 1km swathe of southeast-facing sand located between the Thassos island resort villages of Skala Panagias in the east and Skala Potamia to the west.
Golden Beach is just that, a long stretch of golden sand, although the beach does get better at each end with the central section mainly rock and shingle.
The approach to Golden Beach is off the main road from Panagia and there are several tracks branching down to the beach at either end of the long straight road.
The back of Golden Beach is wide and flat and dotted with apartment complexes built on a grid of small roads and with the occasional taverna. A small road runs along the back of the beach to link the two resorts of Skala Panagia and Skala Potamia.
The western end of Golden Beach at Skala Potamis is by far the most developed for holiday tourism with extensive development at the back of the beach and a string of tavernas and cafes running parallel to the shore.
Golden Beach at the eastern end has a bank of fine sand backed by trees to provide natural shade and a small offshore jetty where the daily tour boats pull in.
The trees thin out as you walk west along Golden Beach to be replaced by flat scrub and the sand gets steadily more scruffy, with seaweed and stones underfoot until it reaches the central section where it turns to rock as it meets the road.
Beyond this the Golden Beach sand improves again until it reaches Skala Potamia where it deepens into a large triangle of sharp white sand and a small harbour.
There is no natural shade here and it's rather exposed but this is very much the tourist end of the beach with sun beds along the shore and an 'avenue' of tavernas and cafes along the back of Golden Beach
