AGIOS NIKOLAOS is a beach resort on the east coast of Vassilikos that has become hugely popular in recent years and is now one of the top watersports beaches on the island of Zante.
The resort at Agios Nikolaos, in Vassilikos, is not to be confused with the port of the same name in the north of the island. The beach takes its name from the tiny whitewashed chapel that crown the headland above the bay.
Agios Nikolaos is not very large, just a scattering of apartments and small hotels, modern cement blocks but at least quite nicely landscaped so not too intrusive. There are several tavernas and two minimarkets and that's about it. A single access road ends at a car park.
The beach, though, is awash with sunbeds and gets very crowded in high summer, many drawn by the huge range of watersports on offer - from pedaloes to scuba diving.
The sand at Agios Nikolaos beach is soft, golden and banks gently into the sea so it is fine for families. It is also very clean.
The countryside around Agios Nikolaos is starkly bare until you get a little further inland where there are plenty of walking trails through pine forest and citrus groves.
There is a free bus in the high season to the nearby resort of Argassi and Laganas. It is run to ferry visitors into Agios Nikolaos, but you can hop aboard to go to the other resorts.
