Agia Efimia resort review & map

The resort of Agia Efimia is a former traditional Greek fishing village located on the east coast of Kefalonia about 30 kilometres from the capital town of Argostoli.

Many of the houses here date from after the 1953 earthquake when many of the original Agia Efimia homes were flattened.

Village life used to be based on fishing but it now centres around tourism and the the resort's quayside where holiday visitors frequent the tavernas and bars.

Yachts tie up in the harbour and drop anchor in the bay throughout the summer season - a cheaper alternative to mooring at pricey Fiscardo in the north and Agia Efemia is a favourite port of call for yacht flotillas.

Only a few buildings survived the 1953 earthquake, but the new apartments and pleasant enough although a recent spate of apartment building has run some alarm bells. Agia Efimia is noted for its many flowering gardens.

The beaches are few and small - just a trio of shingle strips along the rocky shoreline and holidays here mainly consist of sailing, walking the local hills or just sitting in the tavernas.

There are several small coves to discover and there is car, bike and boat hire available in the resort.

The port resort of Sami is just to the south and there are regular ferries from there for day trips to Ithaca while the local Effimia Express has daily boat excursions along the coast.
