Lassi Kefalonia

Lassi was one of the first resorts on Kefalonia to be developed for tourism and it is both the largest and the most commercial on the island. It is also the regarded as the beach resort of the capital Argostoli, both because the latter has no beach and because Lassi has no village centre. Also, it is only 5mins away by taxi or car. So it's not only a popular resort with tourists but a good weekend getaway beach for Greeks living and working in Argostoli.
Lassi is strung out along the main coast road for a kilometre or more and is little more than a ribbon of tavernas, bars, souvenir shops, mini markets and car hire outlets. This isn't a village that has expanded to embrace tourism, there has never been a village here. This is purely a beach resort shopping strip and it shuts like a clam out of season.
Pavements and lighting have been installed along the main road to provide much needed safety improvements on the busy road. There are about 20 tavernas, a similar number of bars and now a nightclub which opens to 3-4am.
There are two main beach strips Platys Gialos and Makrys Gialos. Both beaches are very sandy with a shallow dip into the sea and get very busy afternoon. There are also good public beaches at the main hotels of Mediterrane and White Rocks.
Platys Yialos has sun beds, showers and changing rooms and there is a snack bar by the beach. The beach near the White Rocks Hotel has been commandeered by hotel guests but it is a public beach called Torkopothiro and access is through the hotel grounds. It's much the same at with the Mediterranee Hotel which 'appears' to own the beach but it is public and you can walk through the hotel grounds to get to it or from the rocky outcrop at the end of the beach.
Apart from the huge hotels, accommodation is mostly small apartment blocks screened behind shrubbery and pines between the main road and the main beach. This area is on the side of a hill so it can be a very steep walk back up from the beach if you have accommodation along the main road. There is an occasional bus service in the summer but its mostly taxis or car hire for getting around. A taxi into Argostoli is a popular option or it can be walked in 15-20min.
